Notes
Confirmed chartered on 12/14/1847. Assigned to District 10 in 1850. 1846 Proceedings: A Petition in due form was received from sundry brethren residing at and near Buffalo Springs, Amherst county, praying for a Dispensation to open a new Lodge at that place, and naming Samuel M. Garland, Master, Marble C. Goodwin, Senior Warden, and John D. Davis, Junior Warden. Whereupon, Resolved, That said prayer be granted, and a Dispensation in due form be issued, appointing the officers named in the Petition, upon the payment of the usual fees. 1847 Proceedings: Whereas a dispensation was issued to authorize the opening of a Lodge at Buffalo Springs, in the county of Amherst, appointing Wor. Samuel M. Garland, Master, Marble C. Goodwin, Senior Warden, and John D. Davis, Junior Warden, by the name of Clinton Lodge; and said dispensation being returned with the necessary documents, Resolved, That a charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge, by the name, title and designation of Clinton Lodge, No. 73, appointing the officers named in the dispensation, upon the payment of the usual fees; and that they have liberty to remove said Lodge to Fulicia, Amherst Courthouse. Resolved, That Clinton Lodge, No. 73, be permitted to take possession of, and use during the pleasure of the Grand Lodge, the jewels now in the possession of the officers of New Glasgow Lodge. 1863 - 1866 Proceedings: Listed as suspended. 1871 Proceedings: In July last the District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 10 officially reported to me that many irregularities existed in the management and working of Clinton Lodge, No. 73; among them that the records of the Lodge were imperfectly kept; that no re-cord of their proceedings had been made, except on slips of paper, since October, 1870; that an Entered Apprentice had been admit-ted into a Lodge of Master Masons; that the Lodge had received the petition of a candidate, and initiated, passed, and raised him, without a Dispensation, on the same night; that by resolution, the examination of candidates advancing from one degree to another was dispensed with; together with other violations of Masonic law, constantly practiced. In the following month, the same District Deputy Grand Master reported to me that irregularities and infractions of Masonic law, of a similar character to those above recited, existed in Fleetwood Harmony Lodge, No. 92; and that the Lodge was occupying, for its meetings, a garret over a store owned and occupied by a person not a Mason, who could, if he desired, see and hear everything that transpired. Of course I promptly suspended the Charters of both the above-mentioned Lodges. The papers pertaining to these cases are herewith filed. Whereas, a Dispensation was issued on the 1st day of September, 1871, by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, authorizing the opening of a Lodge at Amherst courthouse, by the designation of Amherst Lodge, and appointing Robert M. Brown, Jr., Master; William W. Thompson, Senior Warden; and C. D. Rice, Junior Warden, and the Dispensation, together with all other necessary documents, being returned; and whereas, the Most Worshipful Grand Master did, on the day of 1871, arrest the Charter of Clinton Lodge, No. 73, then situated at Amherst court-house; and whereas, nearly all of the members of said Lodge (viz: 30) are signers of the petition for said new Lodge, designated as Amherst Lodge, and are desirous that the arrest of the Charter of said Clinton Lodge shall be permanent, and that the name, number, jewels, property, and liabilities of said Clinton Lodge be transferred to said new Lodge, and your Committee being of opinion that the prayer of said brethren ought to be granted therefore, 1. Resolved, That the action of the Most Worshipful Grand Master, in arresting the Charter of Clinton Lodge, No. 73, be approved by this Grand Lodge, and that said arrest be made permanent. 2. Resolved, That a Charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge, under the name and style of Clinton Lodge, No. 73, and appointing Robert M. Brown, Jr., Master; William W. Thompson, Senior Warden; and R. J. McBride, Junior Warden; that said Charter be a renewal of the Charter of Clinton Lodge, No. 73, which was arrested by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, and that the jewels, property, furniture, fixtures, funds, and all other effects of said Lodge be regularly transferred to said new Lodge, with the renewed Charter. 3. Resolved, That said new Lodge be held liable for all the indebtedness of said old Lodge.
