Notes
Confirmed chartered as "Loge Française" on 12/10/1850. Assigned to District 8 in 1850. Whereas, a Dispensation was issued by the M. W. Grand Master to authorise the opening a Lodge, in the City of Richmond, by the name of Loge Française, with permission to Work in the French Language, appointing Wor. Chas. Huberson, Master; F. W. Rosier, Senior Warden and P. H. Taylor, Junior Warden; and said Dispensation being returned together with the necessary vouchers; Resolved, That a Charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge by the name, title, and designation of Loge Française, No. 53, and appointing the Officers named in the Dispensation. 1854 Proceedings: The undersigned, a Committee appointed to report upon the Petition of Loge Française, No. 53, to be allowed to work in the French Rite, have had that subject under their mature consideration, and beg leave to offer the following Report: There are some reasons which would induce us to wish the Petition could, with propriety, be granted; but there are so many grave, and as it appears to us, insurmountable objections, which cannot be laid before the Grand Lodge in a written report, that they deem it inexpedient to do so. The undersigned would express the conviction, that from the truly Masonic manner in which the business of Loge Française has been carried on since it came under the jurisdiction of this Grand Lodge, this privilege has only been asked in the hope of benefiting the craft; and they would assure the brethren of that Lodge, it is from no want of confidence in them that we have come to the above conclusion. We are highly gratified to observe, that not only have the numbers of that Lodge been, steadily on the increase, but the material of which it is composed is such, that the test of the plumb, level and square, will prove it a right true and trusty stone in our Masonic edifice. We recommend the adoption of the following Resolutions: Resolved, That it is inexpedient to grant the Petition of Loge Française, No. 53, to work in the French Rite. Resolved, That the practice of no Rite except the Ancient York Rite, shall be sanctioned by the Grand Lodge of Virginia, within its jurisdiction.
