Confirmed chartered as "William King Lodge, No. 238" in District 29 on 12/15/1868. Assigned to District 23 in 1870.
Whereas, a Dispensation was issued by the M. W. Grand Master to authorize the opening of a Lodge at Saltville, in the county of Washington, by the name of William King Lodge, No. ---, and appointing Wor. S. D. Meek, Master, William A. Maize, Senior Warden, and James D. Moore, Junior Warden; and said Dispensation, with all the necessary documents, having been returned:
Resolved, That a Charter do issue for the permanent establishment of said Lodge, by the name of William King Lodge, No. 238, appointing the officers named.
William King Lodge No. 227
• Named For: William King (1769–1808), a pioneering Irish-immigrant industrialist and philanthropist.
• The Story: Located in Saltville (Smyth County), this lodge was named after the legendary "Salt King" of Southwest Virginia. William King arrived in the region in the 1790s and founded the massive King Salt Works, digging the first known salt mine shaft in the United States and amassing an incredible fortune. Upon his early death, his massive endowment helped build the Abingdon Male Academy (now the site of the William King Museum of Art).
1870 Proceedings: Upon the petition of the Master and Wardens of William King Lodge, No. 227, (and it appearing to the committee that the change requested in said petition would be eminently proper,) the committee recommend the adoption of the following resolution:
Resolved, That William King Lodge, No. 227, be transferred from District No. 29 to District No. 23.
